ESANI is currently carrying out its first collection of waste. ESANI is using the cargo ship North Viking and will trial the ship for the rest of 2019 to determine its suitability for the future collection of waste throughout Greenland. The first town where waste will be collected is Tasiilaq. North Viking is expected to arrive in Tasiilaq on the 4th or 5th of August. North Viking is a coaster (also called a dry cargo carrier ship) which was built in 1976. The ship can carry up to 3740 m3 of cargo with a maximum weight of 2600 tonnes.

ESANI A/S, the new national waste management company is responsible for transporting waste from the town wharfs across the country to either of the two new incineration plants, which are located in Nuuk and Sisismiut, respectively.

In addition to transporting waste, ESANI is also testing to ascertain whether the ship is suitable for the transportation of other recyclable materials that can be used in other locations in the country or abroad.
